Would you sign with a record label?

We talk to (on the phone and by e-mail) lots of singers, songwriters, composers and other kinds of music makers who are very good. Most of them, it seems to me, seem to think the ultimate success for a music performer is to be signed by a record label.

Lately, though, some indie artists have said they don't want to be signed by a record label because they'd rather have "indie cred."

How about you? Would you sign with a label if you had the chance? Why? Why not?

Nope, I wouldn't sign with a label.

If I am good enough to be signed by them, I am good enough to make it on my own.

I don't like to be 'owned.'

I want to do as a I please. Well, as long as my wife will let me.

I would not sign with a label.

I signed with a (now defunct) label, Tempo, for my first solo album. However, when they learned that I was not willing to travel full time (I was also the mother of small children at the time), they lost all interest in advertising my album and promoting me as one of their artists.

Consequently, I learned from that experience, and my husband and I produced my four subsequent solo albums. It was so much more satisfying, knowing that I was not "owned" by anyone but God, and my career/ministry - the good and bad of it - was MY career/ministry!
